Step-by-step plan

  1. 1

Install the safety core first: nora + NINA + DWD WarnWetter.

  2. 2

Add mobility apps based on your route pattern: DB Navigator, Deutschlandticket app, and city transit apps.

  3. 3

Build housing and daily stack: ImmoScout24/immowelt/WG-Gesucht plus grocery and delivery tools.

  4. 4

Complete healthcare and admin layer with Doctolib/jameda, Post & DHL, and fax fallback when needed.

Key context

nora is the official emergency call app of German federal states for police, fire, and rescue services.
DWD WarnWetter provides official weather warnings for Germany.
Parallel app alerts (housing + mobility + admin) significantly reduce reaction time in competitive situations.

Costs

Most core apps are free; premium features and some bookings may require payment.

Local notes

App availability and features can vary by city, transport authority, and operating system.

Detailed walkthrough

Install in this order: safety, then mobility, then everything else

Start with safety-critical apps. Most people install convenience apps on day one and realize three weeks later they have no emergency coverage. Reverse that priority.

  1. nora + NINA + DWD WarnWetter
  2. DB Navigator + Deutschlandticket + local transit app
  3. Bank app + ELSTER Mobile
  4. Doctolib + your GKV insurer app
  5. Post & DHL + daily life apps

The sections below cover each layer in detail.

Navigation and transport

DB Navigator

The official Deutsche Bahn app. Use it to book intercity train tickets, check live departure times, see platform changes, manage your Bahncard discount, and store your Deutschlandticket. Do not use it for urban transit (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, bus) within a city — it lacks real-time granularity for local networks.

Setup: create a DB account before your first trip. Save your Bahncard number in the app so discounts apply automatically at checkout. Enable push notifications for journey updates — these fire when your train platform changes or a delay cascades.

Google Maps or Moovit

For urban transit — U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus, tram — Google Maps or Moovit are more reliable than DB Navigator. Both show live departures, walking connections, and transfers in a single view. Moovit integrates local transit authority data more aggressively in some cities (Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt); Google Maps is more consistent nationwide.

Setup: grant location access always-on during the first month so the app learns your regular routes. Disable this after if battery matters to you.

Maps.me or OsmAnd (offline GPS)

Germany's mobile coverage has significant gaps in rural areas and along some regional rail corridors. Download Germany's offline map before you travel, not when you need it. Both apps use OpenStreetMap data and work fully without a data connection.

OsmAnd is more configurable (cycling, hiking, navigation profiles). Maps.me is faster to set up. Either works for offline routing if you download the correct regional map package in advance.

Finance

Your bank's app

Whether you bank with N26, ING, DKB, Commerzbank, Sparkasse, or another institution, the app is your primary financial interface. Set up push notifications for every transaction immediately — Germany still uses bank transfer (Überweisung) and direct debit (Lastschrift) for most payments, and unauthorized charges happen. Fingerprint login is now standard across all major German bank apps; enable it.

N26 and ING send instant push notifications by default. DKB and Sparkasse sometimes require manual activation in settings — check this in the first week.

ELSTER Mobile

The official German tax authority app. You cannot file your full tax return (Steuererklärung) from the mobile app, but you can check your tax account balance, view filed returns, see assessment notices (Steuerbescheid), and verify your tax ID (Steuer-Identifikationsnummer). Pair it with your ELSTER account credentials. Useful for checking whether ELSTER has received a document or processed a filing without logging into the full web portal.

Finanzguru or MoneyMoney

Germany uses FinTS/HBCI — a domestic banking protocol — for account aggregation. Generic international budgeting apps (Mint, YNAB) either don't connect to German banks or connect unreliably. Finanzguru and MoneyMoney both use FinTS to pull transaction data directly from German bank accounts. Use one of these, not an international alternative, if you want automatic categorization and monthly budget analysis.

Finanzguru is the simpler mobile-first option. MoneyMoney (Mac desktop, iOS companion) is more powerful if you have multiple accounts and want detailed reporting.

PayPal

Still widely used in Germany for P2P transfers between individuals and for online payments on smaller e-commerce sites. Many sellers on Kleinanzeigen (classified ads) request PayPal payment. Keep an account active even if you rarely use it elsewhere.

Government and administration

AusweisApp2

This is the official German government app for using the eID (elektronische Identitätsfunktion) embedded in your Personalausweis (national ID card) or residence permit. An increasing number of government portals — including ELSTER login, online Anmeldung in cities that offer it, and social security portals — accept electronic ID instead of requiring a physical visit.

Setup: you need your six-digit PIN, which you set when you received your ID card. If you never set it or forgot it, go to any Bürgerbüro with your ID card to reset it. Without the PIN, AusweisApp2 cannot authenticate you.

AusweisApp2 works via NFC — your phone needs to support NFC and your ID card must have eID activated (it is active by default on IDs issued after 2017).

BundID

The federal government's unified digital identity platform. BundID is the login layer that connects to multiple federal and state services, from Kindergeld applications to parking permit renewals. The number of services requiring BundID is growing fast. Register early, link your AusweisApp2, and verify your identity at the highest trust level so you aren't blocked when a service requires it.

Health

Your GKV insurer's app

Every major public health insurer (Krankenkasse) has an app: TK-App (Techniker Krankenkasse), Meine AOK, My Barmer, and others. These let you view your coverage details, find in-network doctors (Vertragsärzte), submit sick notes (AU-Bescheinigung) digitally if your doctor sends them electronically, and download health certificates for employers or government offices.

Set this up in the first week and verify your insurance card details appear correctly. If something is wrong, it is faster to fix before you are sick than during.

Doctolib

Doctolib is the dominant online appointment booking platform in Germany for GPs (Hausärzte), specialists, and dentists. Create an account before you need it. When you are unwell, the last thing you want is to create an account and verify your email under time pressure.

Specialists in major cities are booked weeks out. Use Doctolib's notification feature to get alerted when a cancellation slot opens — this is often the fastest way to get an urgent specialist appointment.

Apotheken-Finder (ABDA)

Germany's pharmacy network includes 24-hour emergency pharmacies (Notapotheken) that rotate duty coverage by district. The ABDA Apotheken-Finder shows which pharmacy is open right now near you, including emergency hours. This is the only reliable way to find a duty pharmacy at 11pm on a Sunday — do not rely on Google Maps for this.

Housing search

ImmobilienScout24

The dominant rental listings platform in Germany. Set up saved searches with strict filters (location, size, price ceiling) and enable email or push alerts immediately — competitive apartments in major cities receive 50–100 applications within hours of listing. Checking the site manually twice a day is not fast enough; alerts are mandatory.

WG-Gesucht

The primary platform for shared flat (Wohngemeinschaft / WG) listings. If you are looking for a room rather than a whole apartment, WG-Gesucht has significantly more relevant listings than ImmobilienScout24. Create a complete profile with a photo and a short introduction text — landlords and current flatmates screen applicants on profile quality.

Daily life

Post & DHL

The Post & DHL app lets you track packages, redirect incoming deliveries to a Packstation (automated parcel locker), manage your personal Packstation code, and schedule redelivery. Germany has extensive Packstation coverage — set up your DHL account and register your nearest Packstation in the first week. This prevents missed deliveries when you are not home, which is the norm rather than the exception.

Supermarket apps (REWE, Edeka, Lidl, Penny)

Germany is progressively reducing paper receipt requirements (Kassenbonpflicht), and most major supermarkets now offer digital receipts through their apps. More practically, the apps include digital loyalty cards, weekly deal previews, and click-and-collect in some cities. REWE's app integrates with the Payback loyalty scheme; Lidl Plus offers app-exclusive discounts that are frequently worth activating.

Too Good To Go

Surplus food sold at reduced prices from restaurants, bakeries, and supermarkets at closing time. Enable location-based notifications to see what is available near you that evening. This is genuinely useful in cities — a regular user can reduce their grocery spend meaningfully while reducing food waste.

Kleinanzeigen (formerly eBay Kleinanzeigen)

Germany's dominant classified ads platform. Used for furniture, appliances, bicycles, and anything else people sell secondhand. Essential in the first month when furnishing an apartment — IKEA is not the only option, and Kleinanzeigen listings for good-condition furniture are consistent in major cities. Create an account before you need it.

First-week setup priorities

Not everything needs to happen on day one. Here is a realistic sequence:

Day 1: DB Navigator and Google Maps or Moovit — you need transit immediately. Your bank's app with transaction notifications enabled.

Day 2: Doctolib — register before you are sick. Post & DHL — your packages will arrive before you expect them.

Day 3–5: AusweisApp2 with your eID PIN verified. Your GKV insurer's app with your insurance card details confirmed. NINA and DWD WarnWetter with notification permissions granted.

Week 1: BundID account created and identity verified. Kleinanzeigen and ImmobilienScout24 if you are still searching for housing. Finanzguru or MoneyMoney if you want budget tracking.

Alert hygiene

Every app defaults to sending every notification. That creates noise that drowns out the signals that actually matter. Set explicit rules when you install each app:

  • Emergency and severe weather alerts (NINA, DWD WarnWetter): always enabled, no exceptions
  • Transit disruptions (DB Navigator): enabled for active journeys only
  • Housing search alerts (ImmobilienScout24, WG-Gesucht): enabled with strict criteria — broad filters generate too much noise to act on
  • Marketing and weekly deal notifications: disabled unless you actively use them

Review permissions after every major OS update — iOS and Android sometimes reset notification settings during upgrades.

Risk checks

!Installing emergency apps but leaving location/notification permissions off.
!Using too many overlapping apps without a clear stack and alert policy.
!Relying on one housing portal instead of parallel alerts across major platforms.
